MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
------------------------------------------------------------

Sharpdesk and Network Scanner Tool require the following minimum
system configurations to work correctly. Sharpdesk memory
requirements are adequate to process approximately 50 text pages.
Adding memory improves capacity (pages processed) and performance
of Sharpdesk.

-- Hard disk space:
Minimum requirement of Operating System plus at least 500 MB to
store the Sharpdesk and Network Scanner Tool programs

-- Pentium or equivalent processor
    ( XP: 800 MHz 32-bit/64-bit processor; Vista and Windows 7: 1 GHz 32-bit/64-bit processor)

-- XP: SVGA display; Vista and Windows 7: Direct X 9 support with 128 MB video RAM

OPERATING SYSTEMS:
-- Microsoft Windows XP(SP2) Professional / Home Edition
-- Microsoft Windows Vista
-- Microsoft Windows 7

-- XP: 512 MB RAM; Vista and Windows 7: 1 GB RAM/2 GB RAM(Windows 7 64-bit)

-- XP: Internet Explorer 6.0 or above; Vista: Internet Explorer 7.0 or above; Windows 7: Internet Explorer 8.0

-- Microsoft .NET Framework (Windows XP SP2 or later / Windows Vista / Windows 7)
"XPS File Format Support" requires portions of .NET Framework
3.0 or later. ( .NET Framework 3.0 is recommended )

**Please ensure that the above prerequisites are met before
installing the Sharp Sharpdesk software package.

**Please ensure that the login account has Administrator
privilege when installing on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.

------------------------------------------------------------
KNOWN ISSUES AND WORKAROUNDS
------------------------------------------------------------

INSTALLATION

-- You must be logged in as a user with full Administrator
privileges for the local workstation to successfully install
Sharpdesk. Domain Administrator privileges are not sufficient;
you must be a member of the default Administrator's group defined
by Microsoft for the workstation you are installing Sharpdesk on.
Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 provides a mechanism to allow
non-administrator users to perform administrator tasks
if they know the login to a full administrator,
but it does not work for Sharpdesk. If presented
with a Windows "Run As" dialog, Cancel the dialog and log in as
Administrator before starting or continuing the installation of
Sharpdesk.

-- When installing on European systems, it is best to accept the
default location for the Program Files. If you do not want to do
this, you may only use printable ASCII characters that have a
decimal value of less than 127. In general, this excludes
accented characters. The character set is further restricted to
exclude the following characters: # % ; @ and any characters that
Windows does not permit in path names. This restriction only
applies to the path name of the folder containing the executable
programs for Sharpdesk.

-- Once you have installed Sharpdesk Imaging, please do NOT
install the Eastman Imaging Professional package without first
uninstalling Sharpdesk. The Eastman package and Sharpdesk Imaging
use common registry entries, and putting Eastman Imaging on top
of Sharpdesk will interfere with the operation of Sharpdesk.
Once Eastman Imaging Professional has been installed, you may
re-install Sharpdesk (and it will use the Eastman Imaging you
have just installed).

-- Installing older versions of Sharpdesk on latest version will
produce undesired results. Users are advised not to try this. Incase
of rollback, please uninstall the newer version of Sharpdesk and
then install the older version.

-- On continuous install and un-install, composer printer driver may not
get installed. To install the driver follow the steps below
1) Launch Sharpdesk, click composer icon from the toolbar
2) Composer application will be embedded to the Sharpdesk.
3) Select Tools->Reinstall printer driver.

-- In some cases after installing Sharpdesk and restarting the PC, the installed software might not be launched.
In case of NST, an error message "XXXX not registered, please reinstall software" will be shown when you try to launch NST.
In case of Sharpdesk, application will crash when you try to launch Sharpdesk.
The issue is happening because of "Windows Update" happening in the system.
As a workaround to solve this issue, follow the steps below after "Windows Update" is complete.
1) Uninstall Sharpdesk.
2) Reinstall Sharpdesk.

SHARPDESK DESKTOP

-- The Acrobat plugin StampPDF alters the contents of PDF files
so they cannot be displayed as thumbnails. Files that have been
altered will appear as the 'not' thumbnail (circle with a '/'
through it) on the Sharpdesk Desktop. If you can rewrite a PDF
file, you can correct this problem by saving the PDF file to a
new name. When Acrobat rewrites the file, the problem introduced
by the StampPDF utility is corrected, and the new thumbnail will
be rendered in the normal manner.

-- Sometimes, Word file thumbnails are displayed with missing
pictures. If this occurs, try opening this file with MS Word and
save it in a newer Word format.

-- Occasionally, the Windows system may report a "Server Busy"
condition when performing long Search, OCR, or Composer
operations. This is caused by the various processes trying to
communicate when one of them is busy with a task. The condition
will clear shortly and can usually be corrected by selecting the
Retry option on the system dialog box.

-- When using Convert by OCR to create Excel output files
(.xls), if the input image contained pictures or other graphics,
then the thumbnail generated for the Excel file created by OCR
will contain distorted colors in the pictures detected. The
parent .xls file, however, has the pictures or graphics as
expected. Only the thumbnail contains this unexpected color
distortion.

-- The total page count display is only seen on Large thumbnails.
Small and Medium thumbnails only display the current page number.

-- If you rotate a JPEG compressed TIFF file continuously, the quality of
the image will degrade. JPEG is a lossy compression method, and
repeated rotation loses a little more information each time.

-- If you perform Combine, Split, or Rotate operations on TIFF files with
grayscale images, the color property for the resulting pages will change
from "256 shades of gray" to "256 color" or from "16 shades of gray" to "16 color".

-- If Corel Wordperfect 9.0 is installed after Sharpdesk, following files may not
be rendered from Sharpdesk Desktop.
  Powerpoint
  Lotus Word Perfect
  Corel Word Perfect

-- If Image processing operation is perfomred first and later ICT or OCR operation
is performed then the output might not be in the actual orientation of the input
document. This is because OCR operation before converting the image to text,
internally performs despecle and auto rotate. ICT operation will not consider the
angle of rotation in PDF files.

SHARPDESK SEARCH

-- The Acrobat plugin StampPDF alters the contents of PDF files
so they cannot be picked up by the Search index process. Files
that have been altered will appear as the 'not' thumbnail (circle
with a '/' through it) on the Sharpdesk Desktop. If you can
rewrite a PDF file, you can correct this problem by saving the
PDF file to a new name. When Acrobat rewrites the file, the
problem introduced by the StampPDF utility is corrected. The
renamed file should be rendered as a normal thumbnail if the
correction was effective. Then rerun the index operation to pick
up its contents.

-- The Search index process is designed to ignore certain words
in each language. These are called "noise" words. However, a flaw
in the dtSearch engine used by Sharpdesk causes these words to NOT be
ignored when the following condition occurs:
If the full path name for the index contains ASCII characters with
values greater than 127, noise words will not be ignored when the
index is created. This primarily affects European language systems.
For example, an accented character in the path name for the index may
cause noise words to be included in the index. This condition does not
harm the general operation of the Search feature, however.
The presence of the noise words in the index will just make the index
somewhat larger than it would otherwise be. dtSearch is working on
this problem, but at this time, there is no fix or workaround available
beyond avoiding the use of ASCII characters with values above 127 in the
path name for the index.

-- If a PC with Sharpdesk installed is used by more than one
user, each with separate logon accounts, then care must be taken
with index management. Each user should create and update his own
index databases. All users can see all index databases but files
that have been indexed by one user may not be accessible to all
users, particularly on mapped network drives, and so automatic
index updating is not advisable in this case.

-- If more than one database is listed under 'Currently
Available Databases' in the Index Databases dialog, you may
select the first database by using the Tab key to highlight it.
Then you may use the arrow key to move to the next database in
the list. However, the focus returns to the 'Create' button
following the use of the arrow. You may use the Shift-Tab
combination to move the focus back on the last selected item.
Then the arrow key can be used again to move to the next database
in the list. Repeat the cycle until the desired database has been
highlighted.

-- When reporting results based on files created by very old
Microsoft applications, the type field may be incorrect. All other
attributes of the file are OK. To reset the type field to the
correct application, open and save the file with a more recent version
of the application.

-- In the Advanced Search options, under File Attributes, the
Modified selection is based on a date format independent of local
time zones. If you perform a search by modification date, the
search may fail to consider some files it should. To make the
files visible to the search, adjust the date specified in the
Modified field by adding or subtracting a day to cover the range
the internally stored date could have.

-- Index operation is failed for JPEG compressed ICT created PDF files,
Hence ICT PDF files can't be searched using its content.

SHARPDESK COMPOSER

-- If a fixed font, such as FixedSys, is brought into a Composer
document, the Preview capability of Composer may not display the
layout of the page correctly. When printed, however, the page
will be correct. Using TrueType fonts in Composer eliminates this
problem.

-- If the free disk space on your PC gets low, you should save
your working files periodically to avoid unexpected problems when
using Composer or Imaging. If Composer or Imaging (or any other
Windows application) crashes because of no free disk space, any
unsaved work in progress will be lost.

-- The "object linkage" mechanism of some applications, such as
Word, Excel, etc., is not supported by Composer (.SDF) files.
Composer files may not be embedded in other applications.

-- Care should be taken when cutting and pasting text within the
Header/Footer dialog in Composer. If you want to copy text from
one box to another in the dialog, be sure to just select the text
and not the spaces in front of or behind your selection. This
space contains formatting information that generates garbage in
the receiving box of the paste operation. If you just select the
text, the paste will work as you expect.

-- If you are using Quatro Pro to print files into Composer, and
then want to create a compressed PDF file using Acrobat Distiller
5.0, Composer will create a PDF file with blank pages. This will
happen automatically if you try to send .SDF files through email.
To avoid this problem, you should set the output resolution for
Distiller to 600 dpi (Adobe sets it to 1200 dpi by default). This
allows Composer to produce a PDF file with readable pages. This
problem does not occur with Acrobat Distiller 6.0.

-- If you are inserting Excel files into Composer, the image on
the Composer pages may be a little larger than that produced by
printing directly from Excel. Most of the time, you will not
notice this effect. Sometimes, however, the expanded image in
Composer will be clipped on the right side. If this happens, use
Excel to print the files directly to Sharpdesk Composer. Check
the pages with Excel's Print Preview feature to see how the page
will look in Composer. If the result is not what you want, use
Excel print commands to scale the size of the image smaller until
the Print preview looks the way you want. Then Print the page to
Composer. Composer will match the Print Preview image when it
prints the file to a physical printer.

-- Sharpdesk V3.3 requires the full Acrobat 5 package or later
to create "real" PDF files (as opposed to Image PDF files) from
Composer using the Export command. If you are using Acrobat 4,
you can create "real" PDF files from Composer by selecting the
File/Print command from the Composer menu set. When prompted
for the printer name, use the Adobe PDF driver of your choice, usually
PDFWriter or Distiller. Start the print and follow Adobe's instructions
to create a PDF file. Note that creating an Image PDF is always available
to Composer users regardless of whether Acrobat is installed.

-- Printing of documents with large number of pages may stop, if
the system runs into low resource conditions. As a work around,
try to print the document in smaller chunks.

-- If your PC has Outlook XP or Outlook 2003 installed, and if the
folder contains certain Outlook files, you may encounter the following
message while adding multiple files into Composer:

File not found. Please verify the correct file name was given.

If this happens, please upgrade your Outlook XP to Outlook 2007 and
apply Service Pack 3 from Microsoft. Or, if you are running Office XP,
apply Service Pack 3 from Microsoft. Or, upgrade either application to
Outlook 2007. Or, add the files to Composer one at a time.

SHARPDESK IMAGING

-- The Imaging program does not support the "context" key found
on some keyboards. To launch the context menu within Imaging,
select the object of interest and right-click.

-- The JPEG format used with Imaging to save files is not
compatible with the OCR engine. If you want to OCR an image
after editing it with Imaging, save the image in LZW format.
If you attempt to OCR a JPEG image produced by Imaging, you
will get a blank page.

-- Imaging opens a JPEG file of more than 80 MB and normal
compression file of more than 200 MB as read-only.

SHARPDESK OCR

-- Occasionally, when using Excel output format in
Automatic layout mode, the Excel pages will have a colored
background. If this occurs, use the Excel Fill Color button to
clear the color from the effected tabs.

-- When converting images using Excel output format in
Automatic layout mode, the paper size and orientation in the
output file is always Letter and Portrait, regardless of the
input image size and orientation. When this occurs, use the
Excel Page Setup commands to set the right size and orientation.

-- If you attempt to OCR a JPEG compressed Tiff file produced
by Combine or Split operation, you may get blank pages or the
following error:

Insufficient memory to perform this operation. Quit one or more
programs, and try again.

If you want to OCR such a file, open the file in Imaging and save it
in LZW format.

-- On rare occasions, you may get an error "Cannot find the file..."
when doing an OCR that generates Word output. If this happens,
make sure MS-Word has completed its configuration before trying
the OCR again. MS-Word will do this configuration the first time
it is run by itself.

-- When OCR operation is performed on JPEG compressed ICT created PDF files
then "The compression for the file is not supported." message will be displayed.

NETWORK SCANNER TOOL

-- Newer models of Sharp MFPs can generate grayscale image
scans that are not compatible with the image processing options
Autocrop, Straighten, and Despeckle. If you want to use these
image processing options, do not use the grayscale format when
scanning through Network Scanner Tool.

-- If your MFP supports metadata sets, and you are using one,
you may only scan to the associated profile named inside the
metadata set. If you choose a scanning profile other than the
one defined in the metadata set, it will be ignored. The
instructions contained in the profile named in the metadata set
will be followed instead. If you are NOT using a metadata set
for a particular scan, the scanning profile you select will be
used as expected.

-- If you select the Profile option Override Scanner File Name
Settings AND select the the Profile option Image Processing AND
select the Embed Metadata option under Image Processing Details,
only the names of the files transmitted from the MFP will be
changed by the Override option. Inside the metadata .xml file,
the <files> tag will contain the name of the file assigned by
the copier before the override takes effect.

-- Occasionally, the profiles created by the Network Scanner
Tool will not be synchronized with their counterparts residing in
the scanner. It may be necessary to update the scanner web pages
directly to bring them into synch. In particular, when Network
Scanner Tool is un-installed, and you answer "No" to removing the
profiles from the scanner, or the program encountered an error,
the profiles that were stored in the scanner by Network Scanner
Tool will remain. Use the web page for the scanner to remove
them.

-- If you use the "Straighten" option in the Image Processing
group in Network Scanner Tool, occasionally the result may not be
what you expect. If this occurs, do not use the 'Straighten'
option in Network Scanner Tool. Instead, once the image has been
scanned (without Straighten), open the file with Sharpdesk
Imaging and use the 'Straighten' function under the Tools command
on the main menu to adjust the image.

-- The Sharp scanners that support the Network Scanner Tool need
to be configured to supply a unique identifier when sending
scanned images to Network Scanner Service. Right-click the
Network Scanner Service in the Windows task bar and select the
"Open" menu item. Select the "Scanners" tab. Select each scanner
in the current scanners list and click the "Web Setup" button for
each scanner in turn. When the scanner's web page is displayed,
click the "Setup" button, then the "E-mail/Network Scanning
Setup" button (AR-507). In AR-450, click "Network Scanning" link
under Setup in the left pane, etc. In the "Network Scanning
Setup" page, be sure the "Unique Identifier" checkbox is checked.
If this is not done, all scans will arrive with the same name,
each new one overwriting the one that arrived before. The web
page and its various options are described in detail in the
Network Scanner Tool Operation Manual.

-- The "range" of Auto Detect on Network Scanning Tool is
limited to the network segment that allows UDP broadcast. This
may not be the same as the general capabilities of the network
configuration. If you have more than one adaptor, only one will
be used to determine the auto-detectable subnet.

-- For Network Scanner Tool to correctly place a scanned image
on your computer, the computer must have enough free disk space
to hold the file. If a scanned image name appears in your folder
with a size of 0 bytes, the most likely cause is insufficient
disk space.

-- Initialization of the Sharp copier on power-up may take up to
5 minutes before it is ready to establish communication with
Network Scanner Tool. Attempts to communicate (such as Auto
Detect) made before the Sharp copier is ready will result in
Network Scanner Tool saying the copier is not available. If you
receive such a message because the Sharp copier is not ready, you
will have to exit the Network Scanner Tool dialog completely
before trying again. After waiting approximately 5 minutes,
double-click on the Network Scanner Tool icon on the Windows task
bar to try again.

-- If you share an Internet connection on your Windows XP or
Windows Vista or Windows 7, or enable the Internet Connection Firewall on
Windows XP, the "Auto Detect" feature in Network Scanner Tool
may fail to discover any scanners and scanning from copiers may
not work. To check if those features are enabled, e.g. in Windows XP,go to
"Network Connections", right-click on a connection
and select "Properties", click the "Advanced" tab, and make sure
that the checkboxes under "Internet Connection Firewall" and
"Internet Connection Sharing" are not checked. In Windows Vista or Windows 7,
also go to "Network Connections", right-click on a connection and
select "Properties", click the "Sharing" tab, and make sure
that the checkboxes under "Internet Connection Sharing" are not checked.
Note that Network Scanner Tool uses only one connection, if
multiple connections are present.

-- If Network Scanner Tool lists a network scanning-enabled
device in its Scanners list, and later on the Network Scanning
Kit functionality is removed from this scanner, Network Scanner
Tool will not automatically detect the change, and adding or
updating any profile(s) on this scanner will fail. To correct
this problem, delete the scanner from the list manually.

-- If you change the name of a Sharp scanner using the MFP's
web page, it may not be reflected in the My Scanners list in
Network Scanner Tool. To use the new name, delete the old name
from the My Scanners list and then add the new scanner to the
list manually or by using the Auto Detect button.

-- When naming profiles for AR-507/407/337/287 and FO-DC series
MFPs, note that the hardware only accepts a profile name with a maximum
length of 18 and 20 bytes, respectively. If the length of the profile name is
greater than 18 or 20 bytes, it will NOT be successfully saved on these MFPs.
Use names that are less than 18 or 20 bytes if your network configuration
includes these MFPs.

-- If you use double-byte characters in the profile name or the initial,
Network Scanner Tool may fail to save the profile in the MFPs. To avoid this
problem, do not use double-byte characters in the profile name or initial.

-- On rare occasions, you may get a runtime error in nsapp.exe while updating
profile(s) to MFP(s). If this happens, please reboot the PC and run Network
Scanner Tool to update the profile(s) again.

-- If the "Scan to Desktop" function with the "Fiery Print Controller"
option (for example, MX-PEX1, MX-PEX2) does not work, please set
the port number to "4687" using Network Scanner Tool on the PC.
To set it, launch Network Scanner Tool, select the "System Options"
tab, enter the number 4687 into the "Port" edit box, and select "OK".

-- If you perform Image Compression operation on Auto rotated PDF files
or PDF files generated using OCR operation you will get a message
"Source PDF file is not supported" in Sharpdesk.
In Network Scanner Tool,if you have selected "Auto Rotate" and
"Convert to Image PDF with Compression" in the image processing options for
the profiles, the Compressed PDF file will not be created in case of PDF scanning.

------------------------------------------------------------
TROUBLESHOOTING
------------------------------------------------------------

-- If you suspect that some files were missed that should have
been found during a particular search, the missing files may have
been skipped during the index process. If a file's contents were
not added to an index prior to the search, the file will not be
found when the search is made, even if the file contains the
words you are searching for. Files may be skipped for the
following reasons:
     a) The file extension of the files may not have been
specified when the target folders for the Index were specified.
If this is the case, check the appropriate extension in the Index
Database specification and rebuild the index.
     b) The files could not be opened because they were busy or
in use when the index was created.
     c) The files may have been password-protected or encrypted.
     d) For image format files such as TIFF or JPEG, the file
must first be run through the OCR process. If the OCR does not
detect the words, they will not appear in the index. The ability
for OCR to find the words is dependent on the quality of the
image.
To determine the files that were skipped during the index
process, do the following:
     a) Immediately after an index has been created, right-click
on the Search Index Tray icon on the system tray in the lower
right corner of your screen. Select the Show Last Indexing item
from the pop-up list.
     b) Check the Summary information displayed to be sure the
proper index databases were updated, that the proper number of
files were indexed, and whether any files were skipped.
     c) If files were skipped, scroll down the window to the
Indexing Log area. Files that were skipped will be listed, along
with the reason they were skipped. Any of the reasons listed
above may cause the file to be skipped.
     d) Note that skipping files is considered normal behavior on
an active system; only serious errors will result in a failed
index process.
     e) It is important to examine the log the first time it is
created. When the index is updated, either manually or on a
schedule, only the files that are new in the target folders will
be considered as updates to the index. The prior log will be
over-written by the update log, losing the information on files
that were skipped the last time. To be sure that you know the
results of each index operation, check the box labeled "Show this
dialog after indexing" to always present the log information
following an index operation.

-- If the pages in Composer or Imaging appear as black rectangles, please
make sure your video display driver is the latest version
available from the manufacturer. If the problem persists, try
changing its configuration (hardware acceleration, color depth,
resolution) to get a visible page.

-- When printing a MS Word document to Composer which was
created using fonts which do not exist on your PC, MS Word will
automatically substitute the missing font with a currently-
available one. If you have undesirable results in such cases,
check the "Font Substitution" settings in your MS Word
application.

-- If Network Scanner Tool attempts to delete a "profile" while
the scanner has the "Destination List" (or Address List") opened
in the scanner's control panel, the removal may fail. To remove
the profile from the scanner, make sure that the list is NOT open
on the scanner's control panel before deleting the "profile" from
Network Scanner Tool.

-- If the index for Search function is not updated on the
scheduled time, the password for the scheduled task may be

with Composer and then use the "Send Email" selection in the
"File" menu group.

its thumbnail. Instead, a gray rectangle with the application's
icon inside is displayed. When the application closes the file,

drop the open file into Composer. Either print the file from the
application to Sharpdesk Composer or close the application before

may appear:
Sharpdesk is currently printing. Closing Sharpdesk Composer will

Composer?

the application before continuing.
